Tourist dies after getting hit by bus; driver fell asleep behind wheels

A female tourist walking along a street of Hulhumale’ has been reported dead after getting run over by a public bus this Monday morning.

Maldives Police Service has identified the victim as a 31-year-old Ukrainian citizen. She was walking down Fithuroanu Magu when she was run over by a public bus operated by Maldives Transport and Contracting Company (MTCC) after the driver dozed off behind the wheels.

The accident took place at approximately 6:37 am in front of the Fuel Supplies Maldives (FSM) fuel shed located in Hulhumale’.

There were two or three passengers on board the bus when the accident took place, none of whom sustained any injuries in the accident.

Maldives Police Service has taken the bus driver – identified as a Maldivian male in possession of a valid bus driving license – into custody for investigation into the accident.
