Traffic accidents up 12% in April

Traffic accidents were up 12 percent in April compared to the same period last year, according to statistics released by the police.

The statistics show 874 cases were reported to the police in April. The highest number of cases were traffic accidents. As such, 240 traffic accidents were reported in April 2026, marking a 12.7 percent increase compared to the 213 accidents in April 2025.

However, the accident in April mark a decline from March, when the police dealt with 270 accidents.

Breakdown of crimes reported in April:

  • Traffic accidents: 240 cases
  • Theft: 236 cases
  • Drugs: 169 cases
  • Lost items: 75 cases
  • Assault: 37 cases
  • Vandalism: 37 cases
  • Sexual offenses: 24 cases
  • Domestic violence: 22 cases
  • Embezzlement: 16 cases
  • Robbery: 16 cases
  • Counterfeit and forgery: 2 cases

The police had received reports of total 3,076 traffic accidents last year. The number of accidents so far this year is already 1,064 – less than halfway into the year.

Accidents are most frequent in Male’ in the Sinamale’ Bridge and the Hulhumale’ Highway.
