Motorcycle crashes into pedestrian crossing the road who leave scene before police arrive

An accident has been reported in Hulhumalé where a motorcyclist lost control of the vehicle and crashed onto a pedestrian crossing the road.

According to the Maldives Police Service, the accident took place in Hithigas Magu as a northbound motorcycle approached the vicinity of the Vinares 6 flats, where it crashed into a pedestrian crossing the road.

The Police said the accident was reported to the authority at approximately 8:03am on Wednesday morning.

Both the driver and the passenger on the motorcycle sustained injuries of varying extent in the incident. The pedestrian involved had left the scene before police arrived.

In a later update, the Police said that the accident occurred after a child suddenly attempted to cross the road in front of the motorcycle. The rider lost control while attempting to avoid the child, causing the motorcycle to crash. The Police confirmed that the vehicle did not make contact with the child.

Pedestrian-related accidents remain a concern in both Malé and Hulhumalé. Such incidents are often attributed to pedestrians failing to use designated zebra crossings or exercise adequate caution while crossing, as well as motorists failing to slow down for pedestrians.
