Accidents account for 23.9% cases reported to Police so far this year

Recent statistics released by the Maldives Police Service indicate that road accidents account for 23.9 percent of all cases reported to the institution so far this year.

According to official figures, a total of 8,490 cases have been reported to the police during the period. Theft remains the most commonly reported offense, with 2,326 cases recorded. Road accidents constitute the second-largest category, with 2,029 cases, while drug-related offenses rank third, accounting for 1,828 cases.

Meanwhile, the police received 695 reports concerning lost property, 446 cases of property damage, and 439 cases involving assault and physical injury. Authorities also recorded 224 cases of domestic violence and 184 cases of sexual offenses.

Over the past 24 hours alone, 13 cases were reported to the institution. These comprised five road accidents, three drug-related offenses, three theft cases, and one case each involving domestic violence and a sexual offense.

The Greater Malé Region has recently witnessed several tragic incidents. Last Saturday night, a fatal accident occurred near Vinares-7 in Hulhumalé Phase II, claiming the life of nine-year-old Zeeva Sinan Ahmed. In a separate incident, a two-year-old girl tragically died on Tuesday after falling from a STELCO tower in the same area.

Another serious accident took place in Hulhumalé Phase II on Monday near a Hiyaa tower. A 62-year-old man sustained critical injuries in the incident and is currently receiving treatment on a ventilator in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) at Tree Top Hospital.
