An Indian couple has been arrested on suspicion of attempting to smuggle drugs into the Maldives.
The suspects have been identified as Imran Pasha, 33, and his wife, Kris Ambrosia, 27. The Police have accused the couple of smuggling, distributing, and trafficking drugs.
The Criminal Court has ordered a 30-day remand for both individuals. According to the court order, authorities discovered 2.4 kilograms of suspected narcotics in their luggage.
This incident follows a recent case in which another Indian couple was arrested after being found in possession of approximately six kilograms of drugs.
Under Maldivian law, the import, export, or attempted movement of drugs constitutes a serious criminal offense. The Narcotic Drugs Act strictly prohibits the movement of any controlled substances across national borders.
The statutory penalty for this offense is life imprisonment, along with a fine ranging from MVR 100,000 to MVR 10,000,000.
Furthermore, if the quantity of the imported substance exceeds the legal thresholds established by law, it is presumed to be intended for trafficking. For example, importing more than four grams of any substance listed under Schedule 1, such as heroin or diamorphine, constitutes a trafficking offense and carries a mandatory sentence of life imprisonment.
The law also provides that planning, participating in any capacity, or aiding and abetting drug importation carries the same legal weight and penalties as the primary offense itself.
