Maldives Police Service has reported that several individuals were arrested in connection with a drug trafficking operation in R. Maduvvari.

Police said the suspects were taken into custody during a special operation conducted on the 28th of this month. The operation was carried out jointly by the Drug Enforcement Department, Maduvvari Police, and Counter Narcotics Intelligence.

Seven houses on the island were searched, and a total of seven people were arrested. However, all but two have since been released.

The two who remain in custody were identified as 27-year-old Mohamed Muizzu of Bonthi, Maduvvari, and 29-year-old Adam Asim of Thundi, also from Maduvvari. Police said the provisional weight of the drugs seized during the operation is 53.05 grams.

Both suspects were produced before the court for remand hearings. The court ordered 10 days’ remand for Mohamed Muizzu and seven days for Adam Asim.

Police are continuing their investigation.

Drug trafficking remains one of the Maldives’ most serious social, economic, and public-health challenges, with a growing impact on children and youth across the country.
