A youth has been arrested in connection to the engine oil attack on Mariyam ‘Mandhy’ Zubair, an activist from the main opposition Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) on March 17th.

Mandhy, who works in an administrative role at the MDP office, was attacked with what appears to be engine oil by a group of individuals who followed her as she drove her motorcycle.

Maldives Police Service identified the suspect arrested in the case as Ahmed Rishmah, 20, Sunlight Villa, GA. Dhaandhoo.

He was arrested on Thursday. Criminal Court has remanded Rishmah in custody for 20 days.

As per the Criminal Court order, Rishmah was the individual driving the motorbike during the attack and he had identified the individual who was with him on the motorbike.

The case is under investigation by the Police.

The attack came after Mandhy drew criticism for suggesting during a MDP rally that President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu decided to ban vaping in Maldives last year because his 16-year-old son got caught vaping.
