Maldives, Australia discuss expanding police training cooperation

Maldives has held discussions with Australia on expanding training opportunities for the Maldives Police Service.

Commissioner of Police Ahmed Mohamed met Australian High Commissioner to Maldives David Jessup and Australian Federal Police (AFP) Senior Liaison Officer Detective Superintendent Kathryn Polkinghorne in Colombo, Sri Lanka.

Police said the meeting underscored the long-standing partnership between Maldives and Australia.

According to the Maldives Police Service, the Commissioner acknowledged the AFP’s continued support to the MPS, particularly in counter-terrorism, investigations, specialised training programs, facilities provided, and ongoing technical assistance.

The two sides also discussed strengthening cooperation and creating additional training opportunities in the future, along with other joint initiatives.

Australia has recently increased its support to Maldives’ security sector. A naval vessel donated by Australia was brought to Maldives earlier this year and was commissioned into service this week.
