Police have seized approximately 100 kilograms of heroin and arrested 10 suspects in a counter-drug trafficking operation in Maldives.

The operation was announced by Commissioner of Police Mohamed Hameed in a tweet on Thursday afternoon.

Hameed said that he had been following a well-executed counter-narcotics trafficking operation Drug Enforcement Department (DED), Drug Intelligence, Marine Police, and Forensics while in Doha attending the Global Security Forum.

He said that the police arrested 10 suspects, and searched 10 locations and seized approximately 100 kilograms of heroin in the operation, which took place over the last 24 hours.

However, the police have declined to disclose the specific locations from which the arrests were made and the drugs seized.

It’s likely the police had seized a shipment of heroin smuggled into Maldives via sea.

The seizure of the large heroin shipment comes after police shut down 24 'drug cafes’ in Male’ City in September.

CP Hameed said back in September that the police are doing everything in their power to counter drug trafficking in Maldives, and that the police will not look at “anyone’s face, a particular network, a particular group, or particular electoral district” in fulfilling their duties.
