Drug trafficker sentenced to 14 years in prison, fined MVR 100K

A man from R. Maduvvari has been sentenced to 14-and-a-half years in prison and ordered to pay a fine of MVR 100,000 after the Criminal Court found guilty of trafficking diamorphine or heroin.

Hassan Safeer was arrested from a guesthouse in Hulhumale’ on January 22, 2025. A subsequent search of two properties linked to him – an apartment in Galolhu and a room at a house in Henveiru – uncovered a large quantity of diamorphine.

Ahead of witness testimony during the trial, Safeeru signed a plea deal with the Prosecutor General’s Office and plead guilty to the charges.

According to the terms of the deal, he was to be sentenced to a minimum of 16 years in prison and fined MVR 100,000 – payable to the Maldives Inland Revenue Authority (MIRA) within 12 months.

The judge took into account the one-and-a-half years Safeer has already spent in detention, leaving him with 16-and-a-half years left to serve.
