Maamendhoo violence: 3 suspects remanded in custody of police

Three of the suspects arrested following gang violence in G. A. Maamendhoo which resulted in the death of a 17-year-old boy have been remanded in custody of the police.

The violence in Maamendhoo took place on Monday, February 8. The police have made five arrests in connection to the case; three arrests the same night, and two more arrests on Tuesday.

A police spokesperson said on Wednesday that the court has remanded two of the initial three suspects arrested to 15 days in police custody and the other to 10 days.

The first three suspects who got arrested were identified as an 18-year-old Maldivian male, a 23-year-old Maldivian male, and a 27-year-old Maldivian male, and the later were identified as an 18-year-old Maldivian male and a 25-year-old Maldivian male.

The violence in Maamendhoo resulted in the death of Ahmed Udhayyu, 17, Lily of the Valley, G. A. Maamendhoo. Meanwhile, his brother Firushan Zahir, 21, who also sustained stab injuries in the incident, is showing signs of improvement.

Udhayyu’s body was transported to Male’ City on Tuesday, and is scheduled to be sent overseas for an autopsy.

Investigators from the Serious and Organized Crime Department have been sent to Maamendhoo to investigate the case.
