Migrant worker trampled under jumbo cement bag

The migrant construction worker who died in Hulhumale’ last Wednesday was trampled under a jumbo cement bag, says Maldives Police Service.

The construction accident in which the migrant worker - identified as a 24-year-old male from Bangladesh - was killed, took place at the site of a luxury apartment complex under development by Jaah Investment Private Limited.

Managing Director of Housing Development Corporation (HDC), Suhail Ahmed reported to ‘Sun’ this Thursday that the jumbo cement bag fell on top of the worker from five feet high.

“I have been informed there were a lot of cement bags. And that they fell right on top of the back of his neck,” said Suhail.

Suhail said the construction accident wasn’t a result of lack of general safety, and that the worker had been right below the jumbo bag the moment it fell by coincidence.

The construction accident took place at approximately 5:25 pm on Wednesday. The doctors at Hulhumale’ Hospital confirm he was already lifeless when taken to the hospital.

Jaah Investment’s construction site in Hulhumale’ was also the location of another construction accident less than a week ago. The previous accident took place on Saturday, July 6, and resulted in injuries to a migrant construction worker who was on a lift which fell from the seventh floor after its cable teared.
