The police have launched a criminal investigation into an accident in Addu City that resulted in the death of a father of three.
Rameez Abdulla, 48, died at a hospital in Male’ on Monday from critical injuries he sustained in an accident that took place on May 31 on the main road of his home island of Hithadhoo. CCTV footage of the crash shows that Rameez appeared to be driving within the speed limit on the right ride of the lane when a speeding motorcycle driving from the opposite direction attempted an illegal overtake and crashed into him.
Rameez, who worked at the Fenaka branch in Hithadhoo, sustained a severe traumatic brain injury in the crash, requiring emergency surgery. He was initially treated at the Addu Equatorial Hospital before getting transferred to the ADK Hospital in Male’. He succumbed to his injuries on Monday night.
Meanwhile, the individual driving the second motorcycle involved also sustained injuries and is hospitalized at the Addu Equatorial Hospital.
A police spokesperson told Sun on Tuesday that the accident is the subject of a major criminal investigation.
The spokesperson added that the motorcyclist in question was a licensed driver.
In a poignant Facebook post following Rameez’s passing, his wife Aminath Azra described him as one of the most beautiful souls; kind, sincere, humble, and deeply faithful.
Rameez is survived by his wife and three young daughters.
