Two people have been hospitalized with extensive burn injuries they sustained in an explosion which took place onboard a speedboat docked in Hulhumale’ this Monday.
The explosion, reported to Maldives Police Service at approximately 11:15 am, took place on board the MTCC Express 1 speedboat, which had been docked at the Hulhumale’ Jetty at the time.
The explosion originated from the battery of the speedboat, which reacted to a spark created as the boat’s crew worked on replacing the petrol pump switch.
Maldives Police Service reports that the explosion resulted in injuries to three people; two of whom sustained extensive burn injuries to their face and hands and are currently receiving treatment at the Hulhumale’ Hospital.
The third person sustained only minor injuries and no burns.
The media official from National Social Protection Agency (NSPA) – which runs the Hulhumale’ Hospital – confirms that two people injured in the explosion are being treated at the hospital.
