The police say they found the keys to two motorcycles from which they found drugs, hidden inside the rectum of a suspect during a routine cavity search before he was put in jail.
The 49-year-old Addu City native was arrested by the police on suspicion of the use, possession and trafficking of drugs.
The Criminal Court extended his remand by 30 days on Tuesday.
At the hearing, the police told the court that the suspect aroused suspicion after he suddenly slammed shut the u-box of a motorcycle upon spotting police officers, acted panicky and provided false information when questioned.
The police said they found bags that they suspected contained drugs from the u-box of both the first motorcycle as well as the one next to it, the latter of which the police forced open with permission from the vehicle’s owner.
The police added that a CCTV camera at the suspect’s residence in Machangolhi district of Male’ had a clear view of the two motorcycles, and that officers attended to the scene following a report by a member of the general public that he was attempting to destroy the hard disc of the camera.
The police said that when they arrived at the scene, they spotted the suspect’s stepchild exiting the house wearing a backpack, from which they found a hard disc and pen drives.
The police searched the residence, and found drug residue on several items.
The police also submitted an incident report from the Male’ Custodial as evidence in the case.
According to the report, the police suspected him of hiding something in his rectum during a cavity search during processing. A subsequent extraction uncovered two keys, which opened the u-boxes to the two motorcycles from which the police found the drugs.
Meanwhile, a physical examination report submitted by the police reads that the suspect had a keychain on the loop of the shorts he was wearing, and that the key on the chain matched with a key inside the u-box he had open when the police found him.
Tests confirmed the police seized 161.52 grams of cannabis, 48.88 grams of a Schedule 1 drug, and 17.20 grams of diamorphine (heroin) in the operation.
Meanwhile, the suspect himself tested positive for cannabis.
The court extended his remand, after deciding he posed a threat to society, citing the discovery of a large quantity of drugs from properties linked to him, and the suspicion he was involved in drug trafficking.
