Two Velidhoo men jailed for life for trafficking dimorphine and cannabis

 Two men from N. Velidhoo have been sentenced to life imprisonment for trafficking dimorphine, with one also convicted of trafficking cannabis.

According to the Criminal Court verdict, Ahmed Ibrahim, 44, of Dilbahaaruge, Velidhoo, was found guilty of trafficking both dimorphine and cannabis under the Narcotics Act. He was sentenced to 25 years in prison and fined MVR 100,000 for trafficking dimorphine, and an additional three years for trafficking cannabis under Article 115(c) of the Act.

Under Article 186 of the Criminal Procedure Code, Ahmed’s total sentence amounts to 27 years, 11 months and five days.

Ahmed was arrested on May 7, 2024, on suspicion of possession and trafficking. The case was forwarded to the Prosecutor General’s Office on June 30, 2024.

The second defendant, Hussain Ibrahim, 39, of Happy Garden, Velidhoo, was convicted of trafficking dimorphine. He received 25 years in prison and a fine of MVR 100,000. Police said his final sentence, calculated under Article 186, is 24 years, 11 months and 14 days.

Hussain was arrested earlier, on April 11, 2022, and his case was sent to the PG Office on May 10, 2022.

Police said the convictions reflect ongoing efforts to combat drug trafficking in coordination with relevant agencies. The sentences were delivered on Tuesday.
