Four Indians who attempted to smuggle drugs into the Maldives have been remanded for one month.
The Criminal Court on Monday ordered the remand of all four foreigners for attempting to smuggle drugs with the intention to sell. The suspects, all men, are aged 22, 26, 30 and 58.
The court order confirms sufficient evidence was produced all four, including a statement that verified the discovery of narcotic substances from the vessel the individuals used to smuggle them into the Maldives. The court order also noted that authorities had reasonable grounds to believe the substances were being smuggled into the Maldives for peddling.
All four have been remanded citing they posed a danger to the society, and to prohibit them from absconding.
Drug abuse remains one of the major and prevalent vices in the Maldives, which has significant involvement of foreign peddlers.
Earlier in March, Indian authorities successfully intercepted and confiscated MVR 59 million worth drugs en route from India to the Maldives via sea.
Statistics also confirmed Maldives Police Service have received 494 reports related to drugs so far in 2025.
