Sentencing breakdown revealed in newborn murder case involving grandmother, her partner and biological father

A woman, her boyfriend, and a third man, who have been sentenced to prison for the murder of a newborn infant, received 5 years.

The three have been convicted in connection with the killing, but the Criminal Court had not released any details of the case until now. While the court has disclosed the sentences handed down, it has not released a full report on the outcome of the trial.

The prosecution charged all three with the murder of an infant born in 2019.

They are:  

• Aishath Shaira, Greenlight, A.Dh. Maamigili  

• Mohamed Imthiyaz, Sosunvilla, Th. Madifushi  

• Moosa Ahsam, Shadow, H.A. Filladhoo  

Of the three, Moosa Ahsam was charged with intentional homicide, while Shaira and Imthiyaz were charged with participating in intentional homicide. Shaira also faced an additional charge of knowingly failing to report the sexual assault of a child.

All three were convicted on the charges, with the court establishing that the case was proven through their confessions.

Shaira, the grandmother of the murdered infant, faced two charges: knowingly failing to report a child sexual assault, and knowingly participating in the murder. She was sentenced to six months in prison for failing to report the sexual assault.

According to case information, Moosa Ahsam sexually assaulted Shaira’s daughter, who was under the age of 18 at the time. Shaira did not report the assault. Reliable sources told Sun that Shaira’s daughter gave birth to Ahsam’s child out of wedlock.

Shaira received an additional sentence of two years and six months for participating in the murder.

Moosa Ahsam was convicted of intentional homicide and sentenced to five years in prison for the murder of the newborn child. After deducting the period he spent in remand, his remaining sentence is three years and seven months.

The third defendant, Shaira’s boyfriend Mohamed Imthiyaz, was convicted of participating in the murder and sentenced to two years and six months in prison.
