Criminal Court, on Tuesday, has remanded Maldivian man in custody at a custodial prison for 15 days on suspicion of assaulting several expatriates.
The remand order was issued against a 35-year-old man from Malé.
According to the Maldives Police Service, the man was arrested on Monday on suspicion of assaulting several individuals on the street.
The remand order specified that the suspect had assaulted several expatriates. It was also noted that he had a previous history of arrests and detentions.
Evidence presented to the court included police reports and statements from three victims who reportedly sustained injuries in the incident.
Although the suspect denied the assault allegations during the proceedings, the court determined that his release could pose a threat to public safety, warranting his continued detention.
In the Maldives, where approximately one in three residents is an expatriate, incidents involving the mistreatment and occasional physical assault of foreign nationals continue to be reported intermittently.
