Minister: FTA with China will create new opportunities for Maldives’ fisheries sector

The Free Trade Agreement between Maldives and China will create new opportunities for Maldives’ fisheries sector, says Foreign Minister Moosa Zameer.

He made the remark in a post on X on Tuesday, after attending the Invest Maldives Forum at the Fuzhou Strait International Convention and Exhibition Centre in Fuzhou, China.

“The Free Trade Agreement will also create new opportunities for our trade and investment, especially for our fishery sector,” he said.

He said that China’s Belt and Road Initiative has brought significant benefits to Maldives’ infrastructure and economy.

Zameer said that the Maldives is grateful for the strong and fruitful cooperation between the two countries, which he said spans across government, business, and culture.

“We look forward to strengthening the Maldives-China bond and exploring new avenues of collaboration for the mutual benefit of our peoples,” he said.

Economic Minister Mohamed Saeed, who is also accompanying President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu in his state visit to China, described the Invest Maldives Forum held on Tuesday as described it as the most successful forum yet, with the highest level of participation of businesses.

He said that the Maldivian government encourages foreign investments to strengthen and diversify tourism economy, expand maritime economy, and modernize and expand the financial economy.
