Ahmed Mahloof, the incumbent sports minister, has announced plans to contest in the MDP primary to enter the race for Male’ City mayor.

He announced his decision in a post on X on Wednesday.

“I have decided to contest the by-election for the office of the Male’ mayor, which will become vacant on November 17, 2023,” he announced.

He asked for support for his candidacy.

The office of the mayor of the Maldivian capital will become vacant on November 17 – when the incumbent mayor Dr. Mohamed Muizzu, who won the presidential runoff election last weekend, takes office.

The election saw MDP lose previous party strongholds, including the capital.
