The Sports Ministry is alone in promoting sports tourism in the Maldives, states Sports Minister Ahmed Mahloof.
Mahloof, who attended the parliamentary sitting Wednesday to answer questions, was questioned by Kaashidhoo MP Abdulla Jabir regarding the efforts by his ministry to promote sports tourism.
Mahloof responded that the Sports Ministry is engaged in multiple efforts to promote and expand sports tourism in Maldives.
But its just engaged in these efforts, he said.
Mahloof said that sports tourism can be better promoted with support from Maldives Marketing and Public Relations Corporation (MMPRC) and Tourism Ministry.
He said that one of the main efforts to promote sports tourism is to host international sports tournaments in Maldives.
Mahloof said Maldives hosted nine international sports competitions last year, and two international volleyball competitions so far this year.
He noted that Maldives is also preparing to host a billiard tournament on April 22, with 16 of the world’s best billiard players and local players.
Mahloof said the competitions, along with other events, help promote Maldives as a tourist destination.
“One example is the Maldives Sports Awards. The guests of the Sports Award last year alone have a social media reach of over 55 million,” he said.
