Moosa Siraj, the parliamentary representative for the L. Fonadhoo constituency, has left the main ruling Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP).

He announced his decision in a post on X, formerly Twitter, on Monday.

Siraj said he no longer wished to be a member of the MDP.

He shared his letter to the MDP, asking to have his name removed from the party’s membership registry.

However, he did not specify a reason for his decision.

The move comes after months of speculation that Siraj was unhappy with MDP.

Siraj had been seen as a staunch ally of the party’s then-leader Mohamed Nasheed, before he suddenly withdrew his support to the former president, and endorsed President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih’s candidacy for MDP’s presidential ticket.

President Solih went on to defeat Nasheed in the vote, which took place in January.

However, Siraj had not been seen getting involved in MDP’s political activities since then.

He has not commented on rumors he plans to join another political party.
