Man fined for threatening police officer at football match

A man has been sentenced to jail for threatening a police officer during a football match in Th. Thimarafushi.

The incident occurred during a 2024 football match in Thimarafushi, where a man from N. Miladhoo threatened a police officer who was on duty at the stadium. During the match, he told the officer he would “smash his mouth in”.

He was charged with threatening to commit an offense that could cause injury. The case was heard at the Thimarafushi Magistrate’s Court.

According to the judgment report, the man pleaded not guilty. The court, however, found the charge proven based on testimony from the prosecution’s witnesses. The report also noted that the man later met the officer and apologized.

The court stated that the man had no prior criminal record. He was sentenced to four months and 24 days in jail, but the sentence was commuted to a fine. The court ordered him to pay MVR 28,800 in lieu of the jail term.

The fine must be paid within six months.
