A violent altercation broke out at a Hulhumale’ polling station on Saturday night, shortly after polling had closed for the ruling PNC’s internal elections.
According to videos circulating on social media, the confrontation occurred inside Kaamil Didi School (KPS) in Hulhumale’ Phase II.
The footage shows two groups engaging in heated verbal exchanges before the situation escalated into a physical fight. Chairs were also thrown during the clash.
Two police officers present at the scene attempted to intervene, but the confrontation continued for several minutes.
The incident took place on the same night PNC Chairperson and Parliament Speaker Abdul Raheem Abdulla told reporters that the election process was proceeding smoothly and peacefully across the country.
Police have not yet commented on the incident.
The PNC’s internal elections are being held to elect members to various constituency and steering committee positions. More than 2,000 people will be elected to party posts.
