Ruling PNC’s congress kicks off

The congress of the ruling People’s National Congress (PNC) has kicked off on Tuesday.

Delegates, including local council presidents and representatives of the party’s Women’s Development Committees, have arrived in Malé to take part in the congress.

On Monday, President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu, who serves as PNC President, and Parliament Speaker Abdul Raheem Abdulla, the party’s Chairperson, met with the visiting representatives.

The PNC congress is being held at the Social Centre from Tuesday through Friday. President Muizzu officially inaugurated the congress earlier this morning.

The congress is expected to address key administrative matters, including the election of the party’s vice presidents. 

Candidates contesting the vice presidency include incumbent vice presidents Fisheries Minister Ahmed Shiyam, Economic Minister Mohamed Saeed, Local Government Authority (LGA)’s CEO Mohamed Nimal, Chief Government Spokesperson Mohamed Hussain Shareef (Mundu), and Baarah MP Ibrahim Shujau.

Other candidates contesting for the position are Central Maafannu MP Asma Rasheed, Nilandhoo MP Fathimath Saudha, and Youth Minister Abdulla Rafiu.

The PNC is currently the largest political party in the Maldives. According to the Elections Commission’s registry, the party has 67,579 registered members, while the party leadership maintains that its membership has exceeded 70,000.
