PNC MPs rejects Yameen’s claims of ‘secret revolt’ within Parliament

Ruling People's National Congress (PNC)’s parliamentary members have rejected claims by former president Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom alleging that a "secret revolt" is underway within the legislative body.

Speaking at a People's National Front (PNF) gathering on Thursday night, Yameen claimed that a secret coup is underway within the Parliament as some parliamentarians are deeply dissatisfied with President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu, particularly over the ongoing dollar crisis.

Some PNC lawmakers have since responded to and rejected the former president's claims.

Ibrahim Falah, the PNC’s Parliamentary Group Leader and Inguraidhoo MP, said members of the 20th parliamentary assembly remain firmly committed to supporting President Muizzu. Falah said the current parliamentary term is running steadily despite attempts to "destabilize the Parliament through rhetoric."

Responding to Yameen's remarks, Baarah MP Ibrahim Shujaau, said in a post on X, refuted that such a movement exists within Parliament.

However, Shujaau claimed that remarks by members of the Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) indicate unease over an alleged 'secret alliance' between former president Mohamed Nasheed and Yameen.

"Why harbor such hopes for a change in circumstances? There is no need for a change of heart; we remain firmly with President Muizzu. Quite firmly, indeed," said Shujaau, who is also contesting for the position of PNC Vice President.

Meanwhile, Funadhoo MP Mohamed Mamdhooh reiterated that the entire PNC leadership remains firmly aligned with President Muizzu. He said the President has demonstrated that he is the only leader with the courage to confront major national challenges.

Relations between President Muizzu and Yameen deteriorated within a week of the new administration taking office, eventually prompting Yameen to leave the ruling coalition and establish his own political party. Since then, Yameen has continued to make serious allegations against the President and the current government.
