A young man has been arrested for smuggling and selling more than a kilogram of drugs.
The suspect has been identified as Fauzan Ahmed Hussain, 25, of Sandyside, V. Keyodhoo. He was arrested following a tip‑off from Customs that a shipment containing over a kilo of drugs had been brought into the country.
The joint operation was carried out by Drug Enforcement, Counter Narcotics Intelligence, Customs, and Vaavu Atoll police.
Fauzan was taken into custody during an operation conducted on Tuesday and later produced before court. The court ordered him to remain in custody until the end of his trial.
Police are continuing their investigation.
Maldives faces a severe drug problem, and laws have been tightened in recent years to curb trafficking. Under amendments to the Narcotics Act, drug smugglers may face the death penalty, depending on the type and quantity of drugs involved.
