The Maldives has been elected as the vice-chair of the Economic and Financial Committee of the 81st United Nations General Assembly.
The Foreign Ministry states that the Maldives won the seat by unanimous consensus during voting held on Tuesday at the UN headquarters in New York, United States.
According to the ministry, the Maldives will be represented in the bureau of the committee by Hussain Azhaan Mohamed Hussain, Second Secretary at the Permanent Mission of the Maldives to the UN.
The ministry added that the Maldives will work closely with the chair and other members of the bureau to support the effective conduct of the committee’s work during the 81st UNGA, which is set to open on September 8.
The ministry described the success in winning the seat as a reflection of “the continued confidence of the international community in the constructive and principled engagement of the Maldives at the UN.”
“ The election of the Maldives comes at a time when the country has stepped up its efforts and advocacy for accelerated implementation of the 2030 Agenda, strengthen the global development financing architecture, and ensure that the priorities of Small Island Developing States (SIDS) are fully reflected in multilateral processes,” added the ministry.
The Economic and Financial Committee, also known as the Second Committee, is one of the six main committees of UNGA, and considers issues related to sustainable development and economic growth. The bureau serves in managing the committee proceedings and is able to recommend courses of action at its discretion. The committee usually proceeds in line with the bureau’s recommendations.
