Maldives backs Saudi Arabia over Houthi allegations on Yemen conflict

The government of Maldives has expressed support for Saudi Arabia following accusations made by the Houthi militia against the Kingdom regarding the situation in Yemen.

In a statement on Wednesday, the Maldives said it supports the position taken by the Saudi Ministry of Foreign Affairs condemning the allegations made by the Houthi militia, which accused the Kingdom of besieging the people of Yemen. The Houthis recently claimed that Saudi Arabia was imposing a blockade and restricting humanitarian access, allegations the Kingdom rejected as false and politically motivated.

Saudi Arabia stated that it does not impose a blockade on Yemen and accused the Houthi militia of obstructing humanitarian aid, diverting relief supplies and escalating tensions in the region. The Kingdom said the allegations were an attempt to shift blame and undermine ongoing peace efforts.

The Maldives noted Saudi Arabia’s longstanding efforts, in cooperation with Yemen’s legitimate government and in support of United Nations initiatives, to achieve peace in Yemen and alleviate the suffering of the Yemeni people. The statement also highlighted the Kingdom’s continued contributions through development assistance and humanitarian support.

The Maldives reiterated its solidarity with Saudi Arabia and reaffirmed its support for all efforts aimed at promoting peace, security and stability in Yemen.
