The Government of Maldives has welcomed the agreement reached on the Memorandum of Understanding between the United States of America and the Islamic Republic of Iran, describing it as an important step toward addressing outstanding issues between the two countries, including measures to ensure freedom of navigation in the Strait of Hormuz.

In a statement, the Government said the Maldives considers the development a significant step toward reducing tensions and advancing peace, security and stability in the region and beyond.

The Maldives expressed appreciation for the commitment shown by both parties in choosing dialogue and diplomacy as the means to resolve differences and address issues of mutual concern.

The Government also commended the constructive mediation efforts undertaken by the Islamic Republic of Pakistan, the State of Qatar, other Gulf states, and regional and international partners in facilitating dialogue, promoting de‑escalation, and supporting peaceful engagement between the parties.

Reaffirming its support for dialogue, diplomacy and international law, the Maldives said it hopes this positive development will contribute to enhanced cooperation, sustainable economic growth, and lasting peace and stability in the region.
