Bangladeshi duo arrested from airport in MVR 3.3mn drug bust

Two Bangladeshi men have been arrested by Maldivian authorities on suspicion of trafficking drugs worth MVR 3.3 million into the country.

The two were arrested from the Velana International Airport on Wednesday. Customs Service had reported earlier that they intercepted over 1 kilo of amphetamines on that day, but did not say anything about any suspects.

In a statement on Sunday, the police confirmed they arrested two Bangladeshi nationals in connection to the case, who were stopped and handed over by Customs.

They were identified as:

  • Sajib, 32, Bangladesh
  • Shiful, 40, Bangladesh

According to police, they are suspected to trafficking 1,105 grams of drugs into the country.

They were remanded in custody of the police for 15 days when taken to the Criminal Court on Thursday.

Customs had said that the drugs intercepted in the case is estimated to be worth MVR 3.3 million.

The case is under further investigation by the police.
