Former president Ibrahim Mohamed Solih has called on the government to alter its current course and ensure its policies reflect the will of the people.

In a post on X, Solih congratulated Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) candidates who won in Saturday's elections, while also thanking voters for their support.

He stated that the election outcome signals public dissatisfaction with the government’s policies, describing the results as a clear indication that the administration must adjust its direction. Solih urged authorities to heed public sentiment promptly and implement the changes demanded by citizens.

He also expressed appreciation to MDP members and supporters for their efforts in securing the party’s electoral gains.

Meanwhile, former vice president Faisal Naseem also criticized the government in the wake of the results, calling on President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu to step down.

Faisal further alleged that state resources were used to sway the elections, but added that the MDP was still able to overcome these challenges and achieve notable victories.

Maldivians voted on Saturday in the local council elections, the Women’s Development Committee (WDC) elections, as well as a referendum on merging the presidential and parliamentary elections.

The government, after huge campaign expenditure, was humiliated in the three elections held on Saturday as MDP secured all five mayoral seats across the five cities in the Maldives and the presidency of WDCs in these cities as well.

In the referendum, a majority of voters rejected the government’s proposal to combine the country’s presidential and parliamentary elections.

Notably, President Muizzu acknowledged the outcome of the election, congratulating the candidates who secured wins. The President, via a post on X last night, said the government will respect the results, adding it will undertake efforts to rectify necessary measures.
