STELCO blaze: Worker’s body flown back; funeral tonight

The body of a longtime worker at the State Electric Company (STELCO) who died in a hospital in Bangkok last week after suffering serious injuries in a workplace fire has been flown back to Maldives for burial.

Ahmed ‘Chief’ Azmeel, 43, a supervisor at STELCO, sustained serious burn injuries in a fire that broke out at the old powerhouse in Hulhumale’ on November 26 as he worked to restore power to parts of Hulhumale’ Phase I.

He was initially treated at the Hulhumale’ Hospital before getting transferred to a hospital in Thailand’s capital, Bangkok.

He succumbed to his injuries on December 11.

A spokesperson from STELCO told Sun that Azmeel’s body was flown back to the Maldives on Tuesday afternoon on a SriLankan Airlines flight.

His funeral prayer will be held after Isha at mosque at the Hulhumale’ Cemetery.

Azmeel is survived by his pregnant wife and two children. The family is based in Hulhumale’.

Azmeel, whose career at STELCO spans over 21 years, sustained serious burn injuries in the fire.
