70-megewatt powerhouse to be developed at Hulhumale’ to increase electricity capacity

STELCO’s Managing Director Dr. Ali Azwar states the development of a 70-megawatt powerhouse aimed at expanding electricity capacity in Hulhumalé is expected to commence within this year.

In an interview with state media, PSM, Azwar said the continued population growth in the Greater Malé Region has made it necessary to upgrade the area’s electricity capacity, adding high-speed generators have been used to meet the increasing demand for electricity during peak periods.

He added that plans have now been finalized to construct a medium-speed powerhouse in Hulhumalé Phase II to meet electricity demand during the peak periods expected next year and in 2028.

Construction of the power plant in Hulhumalé Phase II is scheduled to begin next month. With the government's target of completing and handing over new housing flats by mid-2028, the area's population is expected to increase significantly. Azwar noted that additional projects are also being planned to further expand electricity generation capacity in anticipation of future demand.

Apart from this, work is currently underway to establish a temporary 20-megawatt power plant in Hulhumalé Phase II. At present, electricity for Hulhumalé Phase I is primarily supplied by a 50-megawatt power plant.
