A fire at the L. Gan Fenaka branch on Wednesday afternoon left the island without electricity, but efforts are underway to restore power before midnight.
The blaze broke out at 14:45 hrs and was extinguished by 15:50 hrs, according to police. While no injuries were reported, the engine room sustained significant damage, preventing immediate resupply of electricity.
Gan Council President Ahmed Zaki said that after servicing the engines, electricity has already been restored to some areas. He expressed confidence that the entire island will be reconnected before midnight.
Zaki earlier quoted employees at the power plant as saying the fire first started in the chimney and spread despite attempts to control it from inside the powerhouse.
Police confirmed they are investigating the incident.
