A fire broke out at the powerhouse in L. Gan on Wednesday, resulting in an island-wide power outage.
The Police, in a statement to the media, said the fire was extinguished at approximately 15:50pm this afternoon through collaborative efforts MNDF's Fire and Rescue, the authority, and members of the geenral public.
Gan Council President Ahmed Zaki told Sun that the fire broke out at approximately 14:45pm this afternoon.
Citing staff present at the powerhouse when the fire started, Zaki said the blaze originated from the chimney and noted that attempts to control it from inside the powerhouse had been unsuccessful.

The cause of the fire remains unclear.
Zaki explained that the first priority after extinguishing the fire would be replacing the powerhouse roof. He added that, while some generators were damaged, overall damage was limited.
Councilor Abdulla Shuaau noted that the fire has caused a widespread power outage across the island, and it remains unclear when electricity will be restored.
“But efforts are underway in this trajectory at present,” he said, without providing much further details, including whether efforts are underway to bring in a backup generator.
