The conference derives its name from the Dhivehi word "Theveli," which describes the dispersion of light rays on the sea during sunrise or sunset. This concept is employed as a metaphor for disseminating the "light rays of knowledge" across the nation and globally.

During the opening ceremony, MNU Vice-Chancellor Dr. Aishath Shehenaz Adam remarked that the minister's presence underscored the government's commitment to promoting research. She also highlighted the introduction of a 'Student Research Symposium' this year, a first for the university.

MNU Deputy Vice Chancellor for Research and Enterprise, Dr. Raheema Abdul Raheem, also addressed the ceremony, emphasizing that the Theveli Conference is a pivotal annual event for the university.

A total of 237 papers were submitted for this year's conference, with 198 being accepted by the university.
