Police have urged the public not to circulate untrue stories or videos regarding the death of a girl staying at the Maldives National University (MNU) hostel Majudhudheen Dhanaal.
The deceased has been identified as an 18‑year‑old girl.
According to a police statement, the 18‑year‑old died at an MNU hostel in Male’ City on Monday night. The service said it is working with the relevant authorities to investigate all aspects of the case and take necessary action.
However, police said they have observed untrue stories, baseless allegations and videos being shared on social media and other media platforms. The dissemination of such unverified information, they noted, not only causes further distress to the family of the deceased but may also hinder the ongoing criminal investigation.
Police have therefore advised the public against spreading unconfirmed information.
No further details about the incident have been disclosed.
The National University’s Majudhudheen Dhanaal accommodates a large number of students enrolled in various courses houses a large number of students, many of them from islands outside the capital.
