Three state-owned enterprises were awarded contracts on Saturday by the Ministry of Tourism and Environment to establish and upgrade waste and resource management centers in 75 islands across the Maldives.

The contracts – part of the Ministry of Tourism and Environment’s ‘Magey Saafu Raajje’ program - were awarded to Maldives Transport and Contracting Company (MTCC), Road Developmeent Corporation (RDC), and Fenaka Corporation.

The new contracts come after Waste Management Corporation (WAMCO) was contracted to establish waste and resource management centers in 34 islands earlier last week.

With the new contracts signed on Saturday, four SOEs have been contracted to establish or upgrade waste management infrastructure in total 109 islands this year.

According to the Ministry of Tourism and Environment, the rest of the residential islands now have adequate waste management infrastructure or have ongoing projects to establish infrastructure through foreign aid.

The projects to establish and upgrade waste management centers in all residential islands are expected to conclude within the last quarter of this year.

During his annual address to the Parliament in February, President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu had announced that all islands would have adequate waste management systems by the end of the year.

“As HEP Dr @MMuizzu announced, we will have established suitable and adequate waste and resource management centers in all islands. We will also ensure that the necessary equipment and vehicles are also provided to all islands,” said Thoriq Ibrahim, Minister of Tourism and Environment, commenting on the new contracts.
