The police have launched a special counter-narcotics operation in the Maldivian capital and surrounding islands as it expects a rise in narcotics-related crime over the New Year’s holiday.
The operation was launched on Tuesday.
In a statement on Wednesday morning, the police said it expects a rise in the consumption and sale of alcohol and drugs over the holiday.
The special operation to combat narcotics is being conducted by the Drug Enforcement Depart in collaboration with the Hulhumale’ Police, Marine Police, and police stations in the K. Atoll.
As part of this crackdown, police are patrolling the lagoon of Hulhumale’, and monitoring cafes and restaurants suspected of involvement in the sale of alcohol.
The police warned they will take action against all those found in violation of laws and regulations.
The police regularly conduct special operations targeting holidays, which see a rise in narcotics-related crimes.
