Police: Average of seven daily accidents in Male’ and on bridge

A total of 1,355 traffic accidents were reported across Malé, the Sinamalé Bridge and the Highway during the first six months of this year, according to statistics released by the Maldives Police Service, representing an average of 7.49 accidents per day.

The reported incidents included accidents resulting in serious injuries and significant property damage, underscoring ongoing road safety concerns in the Greater Malé region.

Police data covering the period from January to June shows that January recorded the highest number of accidents, with 253 cases, while February had the lowest at 191. A total of 236 accidents were reported in March, followed by 232 in April, 238 in May and 205 in June.

Most of the accidents occurred within Malé City, which accounted for 1,128 cases, or 83.25 percent of the total. The Sinamalé Bridge and Highway accounted for the remaining 227 accidents, representing 16.75 percent. The figures also show that the majority of accidents occurred during the day, with 901 daytime incidents compared to 454 recorded at night.

According to police records, two people lost their lives in road accidents during the six-month period. Serious injuries were reported in 31 cases, while the remaining 1,322 incidents resulted in minor injuries.

The data also shows that 1,482 vehicles were damaged in the reported accidents. Insurance claims totaling MVR 3,284,622 have been processed to compensate for vehicle damage.

As traffic accidents continue to occur frequently in Malé and on the Sinamalé Bridge, police have reiterated their call for motorists to exercise greater caution. Authorities have urged drivers to reduce speed and comply with traffic regulations to help prevent accidents.

Authorities also stressed the importance of adhering to traffic laws, urging all road users to prioritize safety and contribute to safer roads for everyone.
