Main opposition Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP)’s Parliamentary Group Leader Ibrahim Nazil has accused the current administration of generating MVR 150 billion in debt within the span of one year.
He made the allegation while speaking at SSTV’s ‘Baaru Hathareh’ program on Wednesday night.
Nazil said while the current administration continues to berate the former administration – its budget for the first year is MVR 55 billion, marking an increase of MVR 24 billion compared to the first-year budget of the former administration, which was MVR 31 million.
Despite this, he stressed that nothing is being done for the citizens with this money.
Nazil added that he would give a ‘U’ set or even lower marks to the work carried out by the current administration in the past year.
“As an example of this, I point out that the nation has been subject to MVR 150 billion in debt within just a year,” he said.
Speaking further, Nazil described the current administration’s performance in the past year as “extremely poor”. He also criticized the high number of trips undertaken by President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu.
The main opposition party’s Parliamentary Group Leader accused the administration of misusing tax money to fund various needs of the government.
Nazil further said islands remain in a dire state with development projects halted.
“Nevertheless, the MVR 55 billion I previously said has been exhausted. The initial budget was MVR 49.9 million. Following its exhaustion, it was reinforced by a MVR 5.1 billion supplementary budget bringing the total MVR 55 billion; all of which has now been exhausted despite nothing being done,” he said.
Nazil, indirectly referring to the government, said although the administration’s performance in the past year is acceptable to “certain people”, it is not acceptable to the public.
