Maafushi Prison officer arrested with drugs

A prison officer at K. Maafushi Prison has been arrested while in possession of drugs.

Police, in a statement, said Maafushi Police conducted an operation as part of their efforts to counter narcotics on Wednesday after receiving a tip.

The suspect arrested in the operation was identified as a 32-year-old Maldivian man.

According to the Police, 38.4 grams of substance suspected to be drugs were seized from the man when he was stopped and searched near Maafushi Prison. They further detailed that the man was remanded in custody for 10 days upon being presented before the court on Thursday.

The case is under further investigation by the Police.

Sun has learned the man serves as a prison officer at Maafushi Prison.

Prison officers smuggling drugs into prisons have come to light previously.

Police, last week, reported that they had seized 35 kilos of drugs so far this year in 309 counter-narcotics operations.
