Youth arrested with 26 cellophanes containing drugs

A Maldivian youth has been arrested in Hulhumalé after authorities reportedly found him in possession of 26 cellophane packets containing substances suspected to be drugs.

Maldives Police Service said the arrest took place in Hulhumalé Phase II. The suspect, identified as 20-year-old Shiaan Ahmed of Shabnameege, F. Feeali, was taken into custody on suspicion of possessing, consuming, and selling drugs.

According to Police, the arrest was made on Monday night while officers were carrying out a routine patrol in the Hiyaa Flats area of Hulhumalé Phase II. Upon noticing the officers, the suspect allegedly attempted to flee after discarding an item in his possession. Officers intercepted him and, after examining the discarded item, recovered 26 cellophane packets containing substances suspected to be drugs. 

Police said the seized substances had a preliminary combined weight of approximately 24.80 grams.

Following his arrest, the suspect was presented before the court for a remand hearing, where the judge ordered that he be held in custody for 15 days.

The Maldives Police Service is continuing its investigation into the case.

Drug-related offences have become increasingly common in the Maldives in recent years, with authorities recording a growing number of arrests involving young people in connection with such crimes.
