President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu, on Thursday night, suggested there are MDP MPs in the parliament who would not vote against him “even if their finger is severed”.
He made the remark at a PNC event held on Thursday night which saw 13 formerly opposition MDP MPs join the ruling PNC.
Welcoming the MPs, President Muizzu said it had been a decision they had taken in accordance with the people’s wishes.
“You all have chosen the nation. The Maldivian nation is bigger than any of us,” he said.
President Muizzu said one of the main reasons the MPs had joined PNC was to combat the efforts by MDP to obstruct a government elected by the people.
He emphasized that a party operating on democratic values, will not act in such a way.
Speaking further, President Muizzu expressed confidence in more MPs joining PNC in the coming days.
He attributed this to knowing some MPs are presently forced to publicly work against PNC over various reasons.
“Even if their finger is severed, there are lawmakers who will note vote [against me]. I know this very well,” he said.
Concluding his remarks, President Muizzu called upon everyone to remain committed to serving the people and carrying out national work.
