MNP: No decision made yet, but most council members in favor of Muizzu

A majority of MNP’s national council members have voted in favor of rallying behind opposition PPM-PNC coalition’s candidate Dr. Mohamed Muizzu in the runoff of the presidential election slated for September 30^th.

MNP’s Spokesperson Ibrahim Azim told Sun on Monday night that extensive discussions were held regarding the formation of a coalition at tonight’s national council’s convening, where members had detailedly expressed their views.

Azim said the majority of the members were in view of forming a coalition with the opposition PPM-PNC – detailing 35 out of the 51 members in attendance had voted in this trajectory. None of the members voted in favor of forming a coalition with MDP’s presidential candidate President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih. Six members voted in favor of not forming a coalition with either party while 10 members had abstained. 

MNP’s leader Colonel (Retired) Mohamed Nazim who contested the presidential election on the party’s ticket only received 1,907 votes, amounting to 0.86 percent of the total votes, thereby failing to qualify for the runoff.
