GDh. Gadhdhoo Council has contracted a Sri Lankan company to design and build a fish factory in Gadhdhoo.

The contract was signed Tuesday, in a ceremony in Gadhdhoo attended by Fisheries Minister Dr. Hussain Rasheed Hassan and Gadhdhoo MP Ahmed Zahir.

Gadhdhoo councilman Ali Shareef told Sun the main purpose of the project is to create employment opportunities in Gadhdhoo, along with the rest of Huvadhoo Atoll.

“We are pushing them to hire locals. Our goal is to open the doors to employment opportunities and to facilitate fisheries,” he said.

The fish factory, being built with a MVR 5 million investment, will have facilities to process and export fish.

According to the local council, the factory will have the capacity to process 50,000 canned tuna daily, and will have a 25-metric ton block ice plant and 10-ton flake ice plant, along with a fish meal plant and a blast freezer.

The contractor is required to complete the project within one year.
