Gaafu Dhaalu atoll Gadhdhoo council on Wednesday has said that the registration and permission for Gadhdhoo pre-school has been stalled at the Ministry of Education for five months, while the ministry has been uncooperative on the matter.

Gadhdhoo council president Mohamed Ahmed had signed and sent a letter to the ministry on Tuesday raising concerns about this delay, noting the ministry has been unresponsive to the council’s efforts in getting the pre-school registered since July this year. The letter further criticized the ministry, claiming this delay was a deliberate impediment on the education of children.

“The differing political affiliations between you or the government and Gadhdhoo council does not warrant an infringement of rights of Gadhdhoo citizens. It must not also be an obstruction to this council body in performing its administrative duties in accordance with the Decentralization Act,” the letter sent to the ministry said.

The council further said any further and deliberate stalling on providing permission to the pre-school will be viewed as consenting the permission, and as such the council will begin operations of the school.

The Local Government Authority (LGA) had sent a letter to Gadhdhoo council demanding action to be taken against its president for making denigrating comments against President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu in a WhatsApp chat group.

The council however, responded noting it was not clear on what was meant by ‘denigrating statements’ in the issue, and added it did not find any reason to take action against the council president.

Despite LGA’s demands for actions against the council president, the local authority has not taken any action.
