Police arrest five with drugs in special operations at Hithadhoo, Hinnvaru

Maldives Police Service, on Monday, announced the arrest of five people during special counter-narcotic operations conducted at Addu City’s Hithadhoo and Lh. Hinnnvaru.

They detailed that in an operation carried out on September 11 after receiving a tip that an inhabited house in Hithadhoo was being used to brew alcohol, three were arrested at the premise with equipment used to brew alcohol.

The Police identified the suspects as three men; a 24-year-old, a 40-year-old and a 41-year-old.

Apart from this, a 21-year-old Maldivian man was arrested in an operation carried out on September 10 at Hithadhoo after receiving a tip regarding drugs.

Police detailed that when the man was stopped on the road, and searched, they discovered 34 pieces of cellophane containing substances believed to be drugs. 

Hithadhoo Magistrate Court has remanded the man in police custody for 15 days.

Police said that the operation at Hinnvaru was conducted based on information received to police intelligence, of an attempt to traffic drugs into the Lhaviyani Atoll.

They detailed that a 36-year-old Maldivian man was arrested from a sea vessel docked at Hinnvaru lagoon, following which a search of the vessel was carried out. During the search, a big rubber packet containing substance believed to be drugs were discovered.

Hinnvaru Magistrate Court has remanded the man in custody for 10 days.
